Listeria Symptoms to Watch out For

Listeria symptoms, such as diarrhea and fever, can mimic those of food poisoning. When Listeria bacteria spreads beyond the gut to other body parts, it’s called invasive listeriosis.

Potential severe Listeria symptoms usually begin one to four weeks after consuming the contaminated food. However, it’s not unheard of for people to show signs as late as ten weeks after consumption.

Pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and older adults (65 and older) are at a greater risk for developing severe symptoms. Non-pregnant people may experience symptoms such as:

  • Stiff neck,
  • Headaches,
  • Confusion,
  • Loss of balance,
  • Fever,
  • Convulsions, and
  • Muscle aches.

Women who are pregnant typically experience fatigue, fever, and muscle aches. However, Listeria can result in premature birth or pregnancy loss. Newborns with Listeria can become very sick or die.
