These laws exist for a very good reason, namely, to ensure that cases are based on reliable evidence. Over time, physical evidence can disappear, documents can be lost, and witnesses may forget key details. By setting a firm deadline, the statute of limitations law both helps protect the integrity of the legal process and also ensures that claims are brought while the facts are still reasonably fresh.
The way to understand it is like this: From a practical standpoint, the statute of limitations acts as a countdown; once it begins, you have a defined period of time to investigate your claim, gather evidence, and file your lawsuit.
